Course objective: getting to know important medicinal herbs and making ointments and tinctures.
Course content: Short introduction to herbology during a morning herb tour. Common herb collection and getting to know various preservation methods. Practical implementation in the form of the production of animal and herbal healing ointments as well as the preparation of a healing tincture and the cooking of a herb wine.
Historical background: Herbal medicinal uses have probably existed for as long as mankind has existed. The use of medicinal herbs is part of medieval medicine, which has been practiced in monasteries since the early Middle Ages. It is based - just like folk medicine, which was handed down mainly by women and midwives - on the use of medicinal baths, ointments and tinctures with medicinal plants. The word "Pharmacy" comes from the Latin "Apotheca", which is how in the medieval monastery the room was called for storing medicinal herbs. Monastery medicine found its peak in the work of Hildegard von Bingen, where the most common uses of the time were put on paper.
