With more than 30 years in higher education, public archaeology, and cultural resource management, my primary interests lie in maritime archaeology and historical archaeology. Although I have worked in the Middle East, Central America, and North America, my current focus is the Middle Atlantic region of the US. I value living history, building and vessel reconstructions (digital and real), and experimental artifact use to better understand patterns on archaeological sites and, more importantly, past human behavior on land and at sea. Projects have included: predictive modeling of site locations based on environmental factors; digital reconstructions of boats, ships, and military sites; physical reconstructions of buildings; and comparisons of behavioral patterns from reconstructed sites and living history to better understand colonial American archaeological sites. With colleagues at Washington College such as Bill Schindler, Liz Seidel, and Chuck Fithian, I am excited by growing opportunities to engage our students in a wide variety of prehistoric and historic experimental archaeology.
