This open air museum was opened in 1944 thanks to the vision of its founder, Dr Isabel Frances Grant.
It had been already ten years that she realized how traditional life, buildings and artefacts of the highlands were disappearing.
Having experienced the open air folk museum in Sweden, the reconstruction of the first buildings began as early as 1943. The museum shows folk life in the highlands from 1700 through live interpretation and activities available to the visitors.
As well as giving the insight for the actual life in the highlands, the museum hosts collections and archives for the preservation of this important heritage.
