On April 27 2019 Institut Vremeni and Moscow Ethnographic Society are holding a local festival at Voronezh dedicated to Western European Palaeolithic-Mesolithic everyday life. Voronezh is home to the famous Kostenki site. The festival is largely supported by the Kostenki Museum and welcomes everyone brave enough to face Stone Age. 

Did you ever want to make leather our of a fishskin?

It is possible! During this 1 day workshop we will work on a salmonskin. We will use the fat-tanning method; one of the oldest methods to turn a raw skin into a nice piece of leather. It is not easy and takes time, but it's really worth it! The leather will be beautiful, strong and durable.

A 2 day workshop where you will learn to turn a raw fox skin into a beautiful piece of fur! 
We will discuss and show techniques such as:

- Defleshing
- Dressing
- Smoking
- Softening

We will use brains as tanning material.

This course, taking place on two weekends, will teach participants to make effective bows from freshly harvested wood, from a hunter-gatherer perspective.

Arrow making and linen string making will also be seen, and all participants will leave with their ready-to-tiller bow with its linen fiber string, and a set of arrows.

For thousands of years, people have been making flint tools. The well-known flint knapper Markus Plesker has acquired some of the techniques with which the people of the Stone Age have processed flint stones and will gladly pass them on to those who are interested.

This event is dedicated to a Paleolithic weapon – the javelin thrower - effective but very little-known in these days. Fortunately, there are still some enthusiasts of this ancient and almost forgotten weapon. You can meet them in Biskupin.

Coffee, chocolate, potatoes, tomatoes... This widely known and widespread products appeared in our menu relatively recently. When it exactly happened? In what way? And what did people eat in the past, for example 1.000, 3.000 or 6.000 years ago? You will get answers for these important questions during our new event "Taste of the Past".

Join lithic expert Witold Migal of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw, Poland for a hands-on workshop. You will be able to find proper raw material for making stone tools and understand their use. Experience different knapping methods such as direct percussion with a hard and soft hammer and the basics of the punch and pressure technique.
