Early Middle Ages

The Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Living History was created in late 2006 in an effort to combine a living history and experimental archaeology. The CEA deals mainly with the period of Great Moravia. Attention goes to authenticity in presenting everyday lives of ordinary people, craftsmen and farmers, but also the nobility and clergy.

The Fränkische Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim exists since about 1979 and counts 45 hectares. There are about 100 original buildings on site in this ethnographic open air museum. The museum is known for its demonstrations of crafts like making furniture or wooden buildings, working stone, glass or forging iron. Passion plays are performed as well.

Between the Black Forest and Kaiserstuhl, conveniently located just outside Freiburg, lies the community Vörstetten. In an open-air museum on the northern outskirts of the idyllic half-timbered village, young and old can go on a journey back in time to late antiquity - more precisely in the 4th and 5th century AD.

Hornbore by (Hornbore Village) was founded in 1997 and consists of a historically inspired visitor centre with reconstructed Viking houses as an attempt to recreate a smaller trading site from the Viking Age. Although a trading area has not been found here (yet), the geographic location is perfect for it, the water and a cemetery of the period nearby.

The Piast royal dynasty was the first historical ruling dynasty of Poland between the 10th century and 1370. The stronghold Ostrów Lednicki on an island in Lake Lednica is thought to be one of the seats of the first Piast kings. You could say, Polands origins are here.

Since 1995, historic building activities are taking place in Torgelow. This includes the building of an Early Medieval village (9th – 10th century) as well as ship construction the way it could have been in the past. From 2006 onward, there is also an indoor area called Castrum Turglowe focusing on the year 1281 in this village.

When in October 2002 a bridge was built over the Rabnitz in Mittenburgenland, archaeological artefacts were found. Less than half a year later, the Mayor of Unterrabnitz, Wilhelm Heißenberger commissioned a plan for an early medieval archaeological open air museum.

The idea for the „Slawenburg Raddusch” with the exhibition about archaeology in the area of lignite mining in Lower Lusatia was suggested by the Landesamt für Bodendenkmalpflege und Archäologischem Landesmuseum (BLDAM) itself.

In 1990, the middle point of Germany was being calculated – it happened to be in the area of three municipalities: Oberdorla, Niederdorla and Langula. This sounded like a good occasion to attract tourists.

In 1902, an archaeologist excavated on a plateau in Central Brittany and unearthed a well preserved village, deserving to be described in a consequent publication.
