The conference will be held at the Wits Club, University of the Witwatersrand. ACE encourages the exchange and sharing of new work in scientific experiments and closely related activities focussing on African and Africanist research.

This year the REARC meetings are scheduled for October 25th and 26th in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia. We are excited to announce that the Department of Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington will host Friday presentations. And on Saturday, REARC craftspeople will hold a variety of demonstrations/workshops at George Washington’s Ferry Farm.

I have been a founding board member of REARC in the US and have taught experimental archaeology courses at Western Carolina University since 2013. My research interests include foodways, pottery use and manufacture, Cherokee Studies, Neolithic Britain, Woodland and Mississippian studies.

Kolomenskoye Park (RU)

Kolomenskoye (Russian: Коло́менское) is a former royal estate situated several kilometers to the southeast of the city center of Moscow, Russia, on the ancient road leading to the town of Kolomna (hence the name). The 390 hectare scenic area overlooks the steep banks of the Moskva River. It became a part of Moscow in the 1960s.

Tsar Alexis I (1629-1676) had all the previous wooden structures in Kolomenskoye demolished and replaced them with a new great wooden palace, famed for its fanciful, fairy-tale roofs. Foreigners referred to this huge maze of intricate corridors and 250 rooms, as 'an Eighth Wonder of the World'. Although basically only a summer palace, it was the favorite residence of Tsar Alexis I. The architectural and ethnographic museum Khokhlovka (Russian: Архитектурно-этнографический музей «Хохловка») is the first open-air museum of wooden architecture in the Ural. It is located in the Perm municipal district, on the right bank of the Kama River, 43 km from Perm.

Khokhovka includes 23 unique wooden monuments from the 17th to the early 20th centuries that were moved here from different places of the Perm Krai. These structures represent the best examples of traditional and cult architecture of the peoples of the Kama region. Some of them are reconstructed, like a 1905 watchtower, copy of a 17th century original, from the Suksunsky District. The natural landscape is an important asset to the museum.

Sarawak Cultural Village (MY)

Being the largest state in Malaysia, Sarawak covers a vast area of 124,000 sq-km of land along the northwest coast of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. To see Sarawak in one day, this is the basic concept of Sarawak Cultural Village. One leisurely stroll opens seven homes to the visitor, seven cultures, including the famous longhouses of Borneo.

The idea for the cultural village stems from the 1960s, with the first tourism as we know it now. The original idea of building a “model village” took shape close to Kuching and opened in 1989.
Sarawak Cultural Village, close to Mount Santubong, is the venue for the World Harvest Festival (April) and the Rainforest World Music Festival (July). This living museum depicts the heritage of the major cultural groups in Sarawak and conveniently portrays their respective lifestyle amidst 14 acres of tropical vegetation.

This is Sabah, and we are in the heartland of the Kadazandusun people. Nestled besides the Penampang River are the many traditional buildings that make up the Monsopiad Cultural Village, a living museum.

Monsopiad Cultural Village is a traditional village with historical site. Monsopiad was a fearsome headhunter warrior who lived in the village of Kuai nearly 200 years ago. His descendants have built the village to remember their ancestor, and to give visitors an extraordinary insight into their ancient and rich culture. More than just a museum, the concept of the Monsopiad Cultural Village is to document, revive and preserve the cultures and traditions, as well as the beliefs of the Kadazandusun people.

Minsok village is a living museum type of tourist attraction in the city of Yongin, south of Seoul, a theme park if you like. Here once can experience 19th century Korea. The purpose of Korean Folk Village is to display elements of traditional Korean life and culture.

There are multiple sections to the park with 270 replicas of traditional houses of the different social classes (peasant, landowner, yangban) from various regions. One can even find a jail here. One marks the depictions of different regions, like for example a village from the island Jejudo.
Korean Folk Village is famous for the people who wear the costume of Sato (the governors), Daejanggeum (a royal cook of palace), Kumiho (legendary fox with nine tails), Geosang (business magnate in Joseon dynasty), and more interesting characters of the Joseon Dynasty.

Giorgi Chitaia Open-Air Museum (GE)

The Open-Air Museum of Ethnography is located 3 km south-west from Tbilisi at the Turtle Lake. The museum is named after the Georgian ethnographer who founded the museum. It represents a kind of a Georgian village where every house and every estate are a reflection of the different eras of Georgian history. It is 65 hectares large and is arranged in eleven zones, displaying around 70 buildings, starting from the Bronze Age up to the early 20th century.

One of the most famous houses is a reconstruction of an ancient Georgian dwelling - "darbazi", which looks like if it is dug into the earth surface; the roof resembles a beehive. This type of structure was used from the Bronze Age until the early 20th century AD. There are also an early Christian "Sioni" basilica from Tianeti and a 6th-7th century familial burial vault with sarcophagus.
