When you click on the link to join us on Discord, you will see a few elements in your browser or in the application. Here are a few important features to learn about to get started. Below, you can see an image of how Discord appears.

On the left side of the screen, you will see a list of all of the text and voice channels which are available to you. To enter any of the text channels, simply click on the name of the channel and the messages will appear in the main panel.

Text channels have a hash icon before them, such as #meet-and-greet highlighted below. When you enter the EXARC Discord please introduce yourself in this channel so that we can identify genuine participants.

You can also join the #the-pub or #casual-chat channels, highlighted below.

Voice channels have a speaker icon before them (for example “FinallyFriday” in the image below). When you click to join a voice channel, you will start hearing the speakers through your headphones or computer speakers. Unless you are a presenter who is currently answering questions, your microphone will remain muted.

If you want to ask a question about the Finally Friday presentation, you can use the dedicated text channel, which is called “#finally-friday-chat”.

When you wish to chat, you can find the message box in the lower part of the application’s screen.

Older text messages from the channel that you are exploring are visible in the large central box.

You can see who else is in the EXARC Discord server in the participants list on the right side of the screen.

Those are the fundamentals of what you’ll find when you enter the Virtual Pub. We’re looking forward to helping you get started.

How we use it

Before each EXARC Discord event, we will publish a link for access to the server – just follow it and you’re in. Everybody is welcome! When you enter the EXARC server, you land in the “server-announcements” text channel. Discord combines text and voice channels, and we have created several different channels for different purposes.
