In 2010, I gained a doctorate in archaeozoology by studying medieval animal bone from Emden in Germany. However, I had been a keen embroiderer for as long as I can remember. Living in England during the last years of my doctorate, I decided to attend courses in embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework. Soon after, I started my own embroidery company teaching embroidery to students in the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, the US and China. Besides teaching, I am researching late medieval goldwork embroidery from Western-Europe. This also involves recreating goldwork orphreys to better understand the processes involved in making them. This year (2020), I have started to pass on my knowledge of medieval goldwork embroidery to embroidery students all over the world. Frequent updates on my research and my recreations are published on my blog.
