Julie Gibson

I have two roles: County Archaeologist for Orkney and UHI lecturer within the UHI Institute of Archaeology. I am a viking/medieval specialist, whose best moment was probably bringing the Scar Boat Grave to the attention of Historic Scotland in order that it could be rescued before the sea took it. I have worked on several projects in the Northern Periphery Programme of the EU. These frequently engaged with Scandinavian reconstruction projects, and other aspects of Norse heritage. My current research focus is Viking and Medieval harbours in Orkney and I am now an archaeological advisor to a project planning to build a reconstruction viking village.
