Certainly, the earliest Neolithic houses had smooth floors from fine clay stamped down (it was not simply the stamped down surface of the ground but a layer of clay such as was used for daubing walls or building kilns) and there is evidence that floors were often repaired when they became worn; finds, especially from wetland settlements, show that floors were swept out in the same way as they swept ash out of kilns and dumped behind the houses. Broken pots were thrown into pits as were bones and other rubbish.

Určitě, od nejstaršího neolitu měly domy hladkou podlahu z jemné udusané hlíny (nebyl to udusaný povrch země, ale vrstva takové hlíny, která se používala na vymazávání stěn nebo se z ní dělaly kopule pecí), a je doloženo, že tyto podlahy se často opravovaly, když se prošlapaly; nálezy zejména z blatných sídlišť svědčí, že tyto podlahy se zametaly, stejně jako se vymetal popel z pecí a vysypával se např. za dům. Rozbité nádobí se vyhazovalo do jam, stejně jako kosti a další odpadky od jídla.
