Well, far from everybody thought so. It was long before this, Pythagoras (580 - 500 BC) got to the point, the world was round. After him, many people followed - each with own reasons who thought the world was round, even in the Middle Ages.
The Bible is not that clear about the world being flat. There are references to "all corners of the world", but we still use that expression today although we know better than that. Reason why people believed the world should be flat was Jerusalem being the middle point of earth from which should follow a flat world.

Nu, lang niet iedereen geloofde dat in de middeleeuwen. Al ruim van te voren was het Pythagoras (580-500 v. Chr.) die dacht dat de aarde rond was. Na hem volgden er nog velen die - ieder met hun eigen argumenten - dachten dat de aarde rond was, ook in de middeleeuwen.
In de Bijbel staat niet zo duidelijk dat de aarde plat was. Er wordt wel her en der gerefereerd naar "alle hoeken van de aarde", maar dat zeggen we tegenwoordig ook nog, zelfs als we beter weten. Reden waarom mensen dachten dat de aarde plat moest zijn was dat Jerusalem immers het middelpunt van de aarde was en daaruit volgt dat de aarde plat zou zijn.
