Indeed the hand saw is frequently used in our medieval village. But we use the axe even more: for construction wood, fire wood, you name it. The saw dust and small pieces of wood which remain are not thrown away. Just like in the past, we use every last bit. The sawdust and the small pieces are excellent as fuel to smoke fish or meat with: it smoulders well, but hardly burns. That is the secret of a good fire to smoke with: it must smoulder and not go out, but it certainly should not start to burn with open flames. That way, all fuel would be gone in no time and the fish or meat would be burnt as well…

Er wordt inderdaad veel met de hand gezaagd in ons middeleeuwse dorpje. Echter, er wordt nóg meer hout even met de bijl bewerkt: hout om mee te bouwen, brandhout, noem maar op. Het zaagsel en de kleine schilfers die als afval over blijven worden niet weggegooid. Net zoals vroeger wordt álles gebruikt. Het zaagsel en de schilfers zijn uitstekend geschikt als brandmateriaal om vis of vlees mee te roken: het smeult goed, maar ontbrandt nauwelijks. Dat is het geheim van een goed rookvuur: het moet gloeien en niet uitgaan, maar zeker niet ontbranden, want dan is alle brandstof zó op en is de vis of het vlees ook verbrand…
