Viking Age

The South West Heritage Trust conducts a wide range of experimental and experiential archaeological work. Much of this has taken place at the Avalon Archaeology Park, but other projects have also taken place on nearby nature reserves.

In Borg in Lofoten, archaeologists have excavated the longest Viking house ever found in the world of the Vikings. Close by the original site, the longhouse has been reconstructed in its full size. The longhouse is open to visitors all year. Find more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXIbNsCCzKE

Kernavė (Širvintos district, Lithuania) is an area of unique archaeological and historical value. In 2004 Kernavė Archaeological Site (the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė) was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus recognizing the importance of the area according to the criteria:
- the archaeological site of Kernavė presents an exceptional testimony to the evolution of human settlements in the Baltic region over the period of some ten millennia. The property has exceptional evidence of pantheistic and Christian funeral traditions;
- the settlement patterns and the impressive hill-forts represent outstanding examples of the development of such types of structures and the history of their use in the pre-Christian era.

The Natural History Museum of Vienna holds some of the most remarkable prehistoric finds. In display halls covering 8.700² metres the visitor can travel through our planet's history, through the breathtaking diversity of nature and back to the origins of our culture.

Lejre Land of Legends near Roskilde, is the oldest open air museum in Denmark and over has for decades been am example to many. The extensive site was in the 1960s scene for an experimental archaeology village, later followed by an experiment in ethnographic education and now famous for its Iron Age scenery as well as Mesolithic, Viking Age and post medieval area.

Located in the suburb of St Fagans to the North West of Cardiff, the museum was created in 1946 in the grounds of St Fagans Castle at an area of 100 hectares. Besides dozens of ethnographic (original) buildings, moved to the site, the museum has a reconstructed manor house in Elizabethan style and three Iron Age like roundhouses. St Fagans is one of Europe's leading open-air museums and has been voted the UK’s favourite tourist attraction.

25 km south of Malmö, Sweden, you will find the Archaeological Open-Air Museum of Foteviken. Inside a city wall open toward the sea, the world’s only attempt to recreate an entire Viking Age town shows a number of streets with 23 houses and homesteads, reflecting life in a late Viking Age and early Middle Age town in 1134 AD.

At Āraiši Archaeological Park (Āraišu arheoloģiskais parks) you can discover and explore dwellings from Stone Age to Midle Age. There are Stone Age and Bronze Age building reconstructions, that are reconstructed according to recerch data in Latvia so far. The main object in Āraiši Archaeological Park is the reconstruction of the Viking Age ancient Latgallian fortress in the original place – on a small lake island. This fortress represents unique tipe of settlements in Latvia, that is discovered only in 10 lakes in Eastern part of Latvia. At the park complex you will find an original medieval 14th century castle ruins as well.
