I became involved with experimental archaeology while working at the Irish National Heritage Park during my bachelor studies and then pursued experimental research for both by MA and PhD (at University College Dublin), which focused on early medieval house reconstructions. I joined the crew of Sea Stallion from Glendalough (a reconstruction of the Late Viking Age ship-find, Skuldelev 2) in 2006 and took part in the trial voyages from Roskilde to Dublin and back again in 2007 and 2008. I’ve been working as a curator at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark since 2014. I’ve been involved in both the documentation and research elements of several reconstruction projects at the Museum’s boatyard, including two reconstructions of the 12th century Gislinge Boat and our current project, a new reconstruction of the ship-find, Skuldelev 3. I’m very interested in the multi-disciplinary aspects of experimental archaeology and in developing the collaboration between craft experts and archaeologists at all stages of the process, from analysis of the find to the final publication.
