In the Old and Middle Stone Age (in the Netherlands about 250.000 - 7.300 years ago) the people were hunters & gatherers. They hunted for wild animals, but did not keep them themselves. The dog appeared though, from the Middle Stone Age (about 10.000 - 7.300 years ago). This is the oldest domestic animal. In the New Stone Age, farmers settled in the Netherlands. They introduced cattle, sheep, goat and pigs. So, from this time on, people kept domestic animals. Since the transition from the New Stone Age to Bronze Age, about 2.200 - 2.000 BC, horses are kept.

In de oude en de midden-steentijd (in Nederland circa 250.000-7.300 jaar geleden) waren de bewoners van ons land jagers en verzamelaars. Zij jaagden op allerlei wilde dieren, maar hielden ze zelf niet. Wel kwam vanaf de midden-steentijd (circa 10.000-7.300 jaar geleden) de hond voor. Hij is het oudste huisdier. In de nieuwe steentijd, vanaf circa 5.300 voor Chr., verschenen de eerste boeren in ons land. Zij introduceerden hier koeien, schapen, geiten en varkens. Vanaf die tijd hielden mensen dus vee. Sinds de overgang van de nieuwe steentijd naar de bronstijd, circa 2.200-2.000 voor Chr., werden ook paarden gehouden.
