They did not have chimneys in our sense of the word, but from at least the Bronze Age we presume that makeshift chimneys, for example made from wicker and daubed with clay would take smoke from hearths through ceilings (if they had ceilings, which may have been common in the Bronze Age) and inflammable roofs so that it did not catch fire from the sparks. Earlier the smoke simply left through roofs – leaking between thatch or shingles.
Měli už v pravěku komíny (CZ)?
Komíny v našem smyslu sice neměli, ale nejpozději v době bronzové už se počítá s dymníky, např. pletenými z proutí a omazanými hlinou, které odváděly kouř z ohnišť skrz strop (pokud ho měli, což bylo běžné již asi v době bronzové) a hořlavou střechu ven, aby od jisker nechytila. Předtím kouř odcházel prostě skrze střechu - unikal mezi došky či šindeli.
