The term Terramare means prehistoric settlements in the eastern Po plain, above all in the Emilia and the Veneto, which originated here during the Middle and the Late Bronze Age (1600-1250 BC). The construction of the houses on piles was due to the need of isolation of the houses against the wet underground. Terramara doesn’t originate as many think from the combination of the words terra/land and mare/sea, but it derives from terra marna which is a 19th century phrase which refers to places with fertile black earth. The fertility came from the high percentage of organic material in the archaeological layers of the Terramare. This earth was used as fertilizer for gardens and fields.
Perché le “terramare” hanno questo nome (IT)?
Con il nome di terramare si designano gli antichi abitati che caratterizzano la pianura padana centro-orientale (soprattutto Emilia e Veneto) nell’età del bronzo media e recente (fra il 1600 e il 1250 a.C.). Il termine terramara non deriva, come molti erroneamente credono, dall’associazione dei termini “terra” (=land) e “mare” (= see), ma da “terra marna”, termine con cui nel XIX secolo si indicavano le cave di terriccio fertilizzante formato dalle sostanze organiche contenute nel deposito archeologico. La presenza di abitazioni costruite su palafitte non è pertanto dovuta alla presenza di acqua, ma probabilmente alla necessità di isolare le case dall’umidità del terreno.
