Early Middle Ages

A special experience for families to join the ancient midwinter celebration of the Holly King. In the dark, cold days of midwinter the holly tree grows green in the forest. When the summer trees have lost their leaves, the Holly King stands guard over the forest and its birds and animals, caring for them during the winter.

Join us to celebrate the evening of Samhain in the magical surroundings of the Great Roundhouse at Butser Ancient Farm. Between 7-10pm you will enjoy professional storytelling from Jonathon Huet of Walk with Trees and a bar with local ales. 

Normal admission prices. Tickets must be booked in advanced will go on sale in July.

On the day of the open monument, 13.09.2020, the association Rauzwi Living Archeology Mittelweser eV will again present itself in the open-air facility at the old Saxon cemetery Liebenau / Steyerberg.

How did people explain the world to their children 1000, 5000 or 10,000 years ago? Were earth and water separated, were there battles between monsters or did a cow lick someone out of the ice? In a tour we deal with myths and stories about beginnings and origins. There are sources from the Middle Ages, Iron and Bronze Ages that echo how people explain the world to themselves and to others.

In the Middle Ages there were no games especially for children. The tug-of-war or horseshoe throwing was sure to be fun for everyone, regardless of age. Conversely, girls could spin wool and boys could make wooden nails like adults. Children can try out all of this and other exciting activities with the Düppeltaler in their pockets at the children's party.

This is the last weekend of our summer program, but we are by no means giving up! On the contrary: the focus is on physical well-being. On these days, grain is industriously threshed in the village and ground into flour in the hand mill.

This course at the Anglo-Saxon Village provides an introduction into the fascinating history of the English longbow along with an opportunity to use these iconic items.

The course is delivered by an Archery instructor, based at West Stow.
