In this region, there is a long history – since the 16th century - of protected forests. Wood was very important because of the vicinity to the open sea and the „woodless“ marshlands. This had the consequence that there was no agricultural use in younger times in this region!

Warum sind in der Region von Nordwest-Schleswig so viele archäologische Denkmäler erhalten geblieben (DE)?
Die Region weist eine lange Geschichte in Bezug auf den Waldschutz auf, mit dem bereits im 16. Jahrhundert begonnen wurde. Aufgrund der Nähe zur offenen See und des baumlosen Marschlandes war Holz sehr bedeutend. Als eine Konsequenz wurde diese Gegend früher landwirtschaftlich nicht genutzt.
