End of June 2019, the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) held a learning exchange in Budapest (HU). EXARC Chair Pascale Barnes was among the six participants. The purpose was to discover more about the Hungarian museum landscape, with examples of successful programmes engaging in social responsibility in Hungary. 

Museum educator at Ludwig Museum and coordinator of Museum Education and Methodology Centre (MOKK), Rita Dabi-Farkas gave a comprehensive presentation of the very useful handbook which she has edited for museum educators working with disadvantaged groups: ‘Chance with Museums’. 

Two more museum colleagues presented programmes designed to engage and enrich the lives of socially disadvantaged children and children of Roma heritage, using practical, hands-on activities (including archaeology) with good success.

Marta Bokonics-Kramlik from the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Skanzen, Szentendre, HU) presented an amazing programme which pairs children with special needs and teens completing obligatory school community service with positive personal and social results. The programme ‘Museum in a Suitcase’ reinforces the ties between more remote and disadvantaged areas and the open-air museum and provides much needed educational support.

The dedication of the museum staff to such creative and interesting programmes for social responsibility was truly inspirational. Being part of the NEMO network has a range of benefits for EXARC.
