Mike became involved with experimental archaeology while undertaking a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at Washington College in 2013. Part of this coursework included primitive skills training in basic knapping, hide tanning, and prehistoric clothing manufacture. These skills were utilized during the Athra Gathering at Sagnlandet, Lejre in 2014 where he engaged in public archaeology. Combing the passions of experimental archaeology and historical archaeology, his undergraduate thesis involved experiments on the use-wear of 17th century colonial gunflints.

As of 2018, Mike holds a Master of Science in Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture from University College Dublin. His master's thesis involved conducting experiments on the production of 18th century musket balls to determine how their production markings form. Current research interests include how experimental archaeology might be more widely applied to historical archaeology and the modern world.
